International Plain Language Working Group

Plain English Foundation executive director, Dr Neil James, was elected to chair the International Plain Language Working Group when it was established in 2008. The Group is working on the first international standards for plain language, a standard definition and certification systems for practitioners.

In the Clarity journal 63 (May 2010), the group published Strengthening plain language, an options paper that explores the crucial issues of:

  • defining plain language
  • setting international standards
  • training practitioners
  • grounding plain language in research
  • advocating for plain language
  • certifying practitioners
  • strengthening our institutional structure.

The Group have so far met to discuss progress with their colleagues at these international conferences:

  • PLAIN 2009 (Sydney)
  • Clarity 2010 (Lisbon)
  • PLAIN 2011 (Stockholm).
