Plain English can help you ensure your writing is doing the best job of saying what you mean for its intended audience.

A communication is in plain language if its wording, structure, and design are so clear that the intended audience can readily find what they need, understand it, and use it.

International Plain Language Working Group

Every year, we present papers at international conferences such as Clarity and the Plain Language Association InterNational (PLAIN).

We also speak to Australian organisations such as the Australian Society for Technical Communication and the Society of Editors.

Our executive director, Dr Neil James, delivers over 100 articles and speeches each year on public language, with regular radio segments on ABC Radio. Articles have appeared in publications ranging from the Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald to the Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun. Our annual list of the 'worst words and phrases of the year' appears in December each year and attracts considerable media attention.

We are also at the forefront of helping plain language to develop as a profession. Dr James has chaired the International Plain Language Working Group since it was established in 2008. This group is working on the first international standards for plain language, a standard definition, and certification systems for practitioners.
